In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
Lector is a Latin term for someone who reads. Lectors play a critical role in the celebration of the Mass by proclaiming the Word of God through the Scripture readings that precede the Gospel reading.
In the fullness of time, the Word of God became flesh in the person of Jesus. That Word continues to become flesh again and again whenever a Lector stands up to proclaim it to a community of believers. Since the Lector proclaims not just any word, but the Word of God, it is essential that Lectors develop the skills required to communicate God's message competently.
The ministry of the Lector calls for a person to grow in a warm and loving knowledge of Scripture, the living Word of God. The call to become a Lector is something that demands preparation. No one should get up to read to the community gathered for worship without adequate preparation.
In becoming a Lector, you are accepting the responsibility to do your best, to practice, to make frequent self-evaluations, and to continually look for ways to improve your ability to communicate the Word of God clearly to the congregation.
The ministry of the Lector is wonderful work and an extremely rewarding ministry. Through your own sacrifice of time, effort and preparation, God's living Word continues to be proclaimed to all of his people. To be a Lector is to be given an opportunity for your own personal growth in Jesus Christ.
Volunteer To become a Lector, one must be 16 years or older and confirmed in the catholic faith. One must attend an initial training session, as well as an annual renewal training and a day of prayer. Training sessions occur semi-annually.
